Mthwakazi water activist dies

Bulawayo water activists Arnold Payne has died.

He was 75.

Born in Mtshabezi area in Gwanda district in 1938, Payne had been involved in water activism all his life.

Payne, an enduring thorn on the side of government, the local authority and all those that he viewed as being blind to the problem, pushed a wheel burrow all the way from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo to highlight the problem.

In 1992, Payne pushed a wheelbarrow carrying 210l of water from the Zambezi River to Bulawayo and then Gwanda. He emptied the drum and then continued his journey with the wheelbarrow to the House of Parliament in Harare. Payne's plates, cups, clothing and vehicle are inscribed with the words "Zambezi Water for Matabeleland."

It was a symbolic gesture to raise the urgency of the crisis to the authorities to speed up the implementation of the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project which seeks to draw water from the mighty Zambezi to Bulawayo.

Payne had a vision for Matabeleland that it would be transformed by the channeling of water from the Zambezi River.

In 1992, Payne claimed that he sourced funds from donors in Holland for the Zambezi Water Project but the donors withheld the funding after the government insisted the funds be channelled through the treasury.
In 1992, Payne formed Operation Desperation Trust with the aim of raising funds for the Zambezi Water Project. Some of the trustees included Pius Ncube, David Coltart and Israel Ndlovu.

Bulawayo continues to face a water crisis, which has seen the Bulawayo City Council embarking on water rationing. The Zambezi water project was first mooted in 1912 but serious efforts to implement the project started in 1998 when the Dumiso Dabengwa-led Matabeleland Zambezi Water Trust was formed.

I am a child of Matebeleland, yes where there is the University of Science and Technology but l was refused entry, l was told that l don't have science yet we have no science labs in our schools, they go on to tell me that l am not educated. I am a child of Matabeleland who was refused a scholarship because my father is not a war hero yet my parents used to attended those rallies at Stanley Square, the world watches while l weep for my beloved Matebeleland. Is it a crime to be born Kalanga? is it a crime to be born Ndebele? is it a crime to be born Tonga? Is it a crime to be born Venda? Is it a crime to be born Suthu? I say peace they say sies, l say democracy they say l am a demon l will crazy, l say freedom they say l am doom. The decisions they make for my beloved Matabeleland become diseases, they come with their polluted tricks and call them politics, l continue succumbing to the ravages of tribalism, l am hated for who l am, l am Matabeleland, l want peace not gifts..........

Gukurahundi massacre victims remembered in South Africa

ZIMBABWEANS in South Africa last Saturday remembered the victims of the 1980s Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland and
the Midlands provinces.The commemoration was organised by a Johannesburg-based civil society group, the Gukurahundi Genocide Survivors for Justice.
The civil group 's founder, Magugu Khumalo, said they will not rest until perpetrators of the killings were brought to justice. Magugu said they will soon approach the United Nations Security Council to seek justice for the victims. She said they first approached the International Criminal Court but were told the
court only dealt with human rights abuses that happened after 2000. They were advised to approach the UN Security Council, she said.
"We will be approaching the Security Council to ensure the Gukurahundi perpetrators are punished. We also want the victims to be compensated.
Remember Gukurahundi was classified as genocide in 2010, " she said. About 20 000 ethnic Ndebeles were killed in Matabeleland and the Midlands provinces in the early 1980s when President Robert Mugabe unleashed a crack North Korea- trained military unit to crush a rebellion by former Zipra combatants. A report by the Catholic Commission for Peace and Justice said some of the victims were buried alive while some pregnant women had their wombs slashed open. Speaking at the burial of former Zapu leader Joshua Nkomo, in July 1999, Mugabe described the killings as a "moment of madness".
The killings have remained a major point of grievance for the Ndebeles who have view the massacres as a form of genocide.
Khumalo said they want Mugabe and Perence Shiri who was in charge of the army's Fifth Brigade at the time of the campaign indicted for the Gukurahundi
crimes. She said it was also important that children whose parents were killed be assisted to get proper identification documents.
Khumalo said it was critical to deal with this matter expeditiously before the perpetrators die off the world stage adding that the journey would be long but justice would be delivered at the end . She added that, the fact some Nazi war criminals were still being pursued almost 70 years after the end of the Second World War gave them hope that their efforts will not be in vain.
Mbuso Fuzwayo, the secretary general of Ibhetshu Likazulu civic group , said the government was always frustrating their efforts to hold the commemorations in Zimbabwe. "It's a pity that there are some people who ran away to South Africa during that era and their parents and relatives have passed on without seeing them. Mugabe wants to destroy evidence of Gukurahundi as you can see that some of the witnesses are dying," he said.
He said some of the Gukurahundi victims were orphaned with no one to pay for their education adding there is need to break the cycle of poverty in such families by paying fees for the education of their children. Bonaventure Kageruka from the Community of Rwanda Genocide Survivors in South Africa
encouraged Zimbabweans to pursue the Gukurahundi issue to its logical conclusion.
"Do not be silenced, tell the world what happened and seek justice. As victims you carry a burden in your heart of wanting to know where your relatives are buried. I am with you in this sad moment and one day justice shall prevail," he said.

Matabeleland refuses to mourn dead Shamuyarira

PRESSURE groups in the Matabeleland region yesterday said they would not mourn the death of former minister and retired Zanu PF
information secretary Nathan Shamuyarira due to his provocative Shamuyarira died on Wednesday night at West End Clinic in Harare. He was 85.
Shamuyarira triggered a political firestorm in 2009 when he publically expressed no regret for the brutal killing of more than 20 000
civilians by the notorious 5 Brigade in Matabeleland and some parts of the Midlands province.
Shamuyarira told The Standard the that President Robert Mugabe and former Cabinet minister Edison Zvobgo were wrong to apologise for the 5 Brigade
massacres.
"No, I don't regret. They (5 Brigade) were doing a job to protect the people," Shamuyarira said. The comments torched off a row with
political leaders in Matabeleland where the North Korean-trained 5 Brigade was deployed ostensibly to crush dissidents which Mugabe said were loyal to his chief political opponent at the time, the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo. Mbuso Fuzwayo, secretary-general of
Ibhetshu Likazulu, said Shamuyarira "caused pain in the region" with his comments. "We won't mourn or miss him. At least he is gone.
He attacked Mugabe and Zvobgo for offering their half-hearted apologies on the killing of our people. He (Shamuyarira) never showed any remorse on the tragic loss of those innocent people. He himself died of an illness, but those people were butchered and he celebrated that. So his death is a relief to
some of us, as people who were so hardened on Gukurahundi are departing. Maybe reconciliation can be achieved," Fuzwayo said.
Mugabe described the massacres as a "moment of madness" that should never be repeated while the late Zvobgo apologised
and admitted that the massacres gave him
sleepless nights. War veteran Max Mnkandla said the region is still waiting for an apology from the national leadership."While we don't celebrate or wish anyone to die, we do forgive Shamuyarira but we don't forget his Gukurahundi remarks," Mnkandla
said. "People (Gukurahundi victims) are still in pain of the killings, but while he was still alive Shamuyarira saw it as a light matter and that
is why he criticised Mugabe for apologising. "There was need and there is still need for an apology from the national leadership,"
Mnkandla added.

Message from Zanu PF on the Ndebele people situation in Zimbabwe

1. We have driven the Ndebele out of Matebeleland and Buruwayo over the past 34 years and our census back up this evidence and is a confirmation of the achievement of our Grand Plan

2. Ndebele women are infertile. They are not worth marrying but only abuse and neglect. Look what even our wayward son Tsvangirai did with that Ndebele girl who happened to be fertile. He operated in line with our Grand Plan objectives of impregnating those Ndebele women who are lucky to be fertile and then abandoning them as per our objectives. We are still doing well in diluting and damaging the Ndebele.

3. Ndebele men do not marry because we have made the majority of them jobless and economically poor hence their women are flocking to our people in huge numbers. They will continue to do so for the next coming years and by the time they realise it, we will have wiped the Ndebele and Ndebeleness out of the face of Zimbabwe. Cdes we are doing well and thanks for the great Messianic leadership of his excellency, the commander in chief of the Defence Forces of Zimbabwe, R.G. Mugabe.

4. The plan to destroy Buruwayo economically has spectacularly succeeded. Our census reveals that this is so as thousands remain jobless in Matebeleland
5. Our plan to destroy the Ndebele culturally and linguistically is still on course... We have deployed and we continue to deploy Teachers who do not speak local languages to Primary Schools and they are doing well as evidenced by the fact they are now running the Ndebele curriculum and scandalising local languages and the Ndebele Language examinations.

6. Realising what we have done over the years, Ndebele people are becoming jittery, therefore we have deployed the security apparatus into Matebeleland and made it a police territory. This is in anticipation of a possible uprising although this is still far from being a reality. We have got to be prepared for that eventuality and deal with them ruthlessly.

7. We have reclaimed Matebeleland and most of our people are now owners of land in Matebeleland, right under their nose and they can not do anything
8. We realize that the majority of Ndebele people still idolise Joshua Nkomo who gave Matebeleland to us and as such we have erected his statue in Bulawayo and this has proved magical for us. As they celebrate Nkomo, we celebrate his weaknesses that gave Matebeleland to us.

9. We have turned our swords to the white men too and we continue to do so without fear. We did strike "fear into the whiteman's heart" during the land invasions and we continue to do so. There are some good Ndebele people who have worked hard to help us achieve our goals and we have rewarded them well. The late John Nkomo comes to mind. Professor Jonathan Moyo has been a dependable son of the soil who has been outstanding and managed to tame the ANC, Jacob Gadleyihlekisa Zuma and the so called big African Power South Africa. We defeated Mandela too. Obert Mpofu has been magical and dependable to us. Simon Khaya Moyo has not disappointed us either and so is Khutshekhaya and Jabulani, the war veteran leader. This is just to name but a few. Dumiso Dabengwa is trying to rebel but it will not be for long. We are monitoring him closely and if he becomes too big for his boots, we will deal with him ruthlessly.

10. We have taught both the Ndebele and the whitemen who is the boss in Zimbabwe.They now know their place in Zimbabwe.

11. A few Ndebele people refuse to speak our language and we should ensure that we criminalise this behaviour through our security apparatus and those who dare challenge us must be dealt with ruthlessly.

12. We have virtually taken over local governmental administration levers of power in Matebeleland, giving us access to local resources in this territory. We must accelerate the pace of resource exploitation in this territory for our benefit, while their so called leaders remain silent.

Military intelligence takes over Baba Jukwa investigation

A branch of military intelligence has seized control of the Baba Jukwa investigation from
the police in the wake of new evidence linking the syndicate to vigilantes believed to have
attacked the Zimbabwean consulate in South Africa last year.
The intervention follows repeated attempts emanating from computers in South Africa and The Netherlands to access information
held by a technical unit at Harare Central Police Station.
The files are believed to hold evidence which implicates a number of individuals who collaborated with the Baba Jukwa syndicate.
The attempts to access the information are believed to have been motivated by anxiety over exactly how much the authorities know
about the Baba Jukwa syndicate.
On Friday evening, a military officer working on the case said the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had retrieved material previously held
by the police and was now the point agency in directing investigations.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officer said the ministry had a renewed interest in the case following revelations that
a group calling itself the Gunda Nleya Brigade (GNB) was involved in an attack on the Zimbabwean consulate in South Africa .
The Sunday Mail reports that the consulate captured closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the alleged attack. Efforts to view
the video last week were unsuccessful. The military is believed to have been involved in investigations into Baba Jukwa as early as
May last year, but had not taken any action as the profiles of the domestic collaborators were not considered national security threats.
Efforts to get a comment from national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba last week
were fruitless as she asked this newspaper to call her back later in the day.
Her number then went unanswered. Last week The Sunday Mail reported that a number of individuals in Harare and Masvingo have been short-listed for offences ranging from possession and distribution of pornography to contravention of the Official Secrets Act.
